Sublimated hoodies

The method that freed team gear from small logos on plain fabric. Sublimation dyes your design into the garment itself, edge to edge, and complexity costs nothing extra.

The technology, in plain English

Most decoration sits on fabric. Sublimation gets inside it. Your design is printed in reverse onto transfer media with sublimation inks, then pressed against the polyester at heat. The inks vaporise, penetrate the fibre, and solidify inside it as the fabric cools. When the press lifts, there is no layer, no edge, no hand-feel where the design is: just fabric that happens to carry your artwork in its actual threads.

Every downstream benefit flows from that one fact. Nothing on the surface means nothing to crack when the fleece flexes at the elbows. Nothing to peel at the corners after fifty washes. No heavy print panel turning a soft hoodie into a plastic bib. And no physical limit on coverage: the "print area" is the entire garment, hood to hem, which is why sublimated gear looks designed rather than decorated. If you have been searching for all-over-print hoodies, this is the method behind every example you liked.

The economics nobody explains

Traditional decoration charges by complexity. Every screen-print colour needs its own setup; every extra position is another job; every player name is a per-unit add-on. The pricing model redesigns your artwork for you, because the committee starts deleting colours and positions to hold the budget.

Sublimation inverts this. Everything is one digital file, printed in one pass, so a design with fourteen colours, a sponsor on each sleeve, a full-back graphic and every player's nickname costs the same to decorate as a modest one. That is why our sublimated quotes include unlimited colours, unlimited logos and placements, and all names and numbers, and why there are no setup or artwork fees to stack. The design decision returns to where it belongs: what looks best, not what fits the fee schedule. This economics story is half the argument in our cost guide, and worth five minutes if a decorator's quote is sitting in your other tab.

What designers do with total freedom

Some patterns we see weekly on the sublimated line. Full-fade builds, where club colours melt from hood to hem. Panel designs that echo the playing strip, so warm-up gear and kit read as one system. Heritage pieces with honour rolls, premiership years or a whole cohort's names worked into the back. Sponsor suites laid out cleanly instead of crowbarred into one chest square. And subtle-tone designs, tone-on-tone patterns that read as premium streetwear until you get close enough to spot the club crest in the weave.

You do not need to arrive knowing which of these you want. Send inspiration, old gear photos or nothing at all: once you order, our designers produce a proof within 1 to 2 business days and revise without limit until your group approves. New sublimated projects appear on the VS Wear Instagram most weeks of the year if you want to see the range of what groups ask for.

Honest limits, stated plainly

Three of them. Sublimation needs polyester, so if your heart is set on the 380gsm heavyweight cotton hand-feel, the right pairing is embroidery or screen print on that line instead. Very dark existing fabrics cannot be sublimated lighter, because the process adds dye rather than paint; made-to-order manufacture sidesteps this entirely since your base fabric is produced in your colours to begin with. And extremely precise corporate colour systems can behave differently on fabric than on screen, which is why the proof-and-approval step exists and why we flag any risky colour before production rather than surprising you after.

If any of those three change your answer, the decoration comparison guide walks the alternatives, and mixing methods across one order, sublimated player gear plus embroidered staff cotton, is completely normal. What we will not do is wave you past the limits to close a sale; a supplier who says yes to sublimating your cotton hoodie is telling you they either do not understand their own process or assume you will not notice, and neither is someone to hand gear to.

From whatever you have to a production file

A quiet fear stops a lot of groups from ordering sublimated gear: the sense that full-garment design demands professional artwork they do not have. Here is what actually happens. You send whatever exists, a crest scanned from a letterhead, a phone photo of last season's jumper, a half-finished idea in a free design app, or nothing beyond "our colours are green and gold and we hate our current gear". Once your order is placed, our designers rebuild everything properly: logos are redrawn clean at production resolution, colours are set against your references, and the layout is engineered for the actual garment panels so nothing important falls into a seam or disappears under the hood.

Then the revision loop runs until it is right. First proof within 1 to 2 business days once your order is in, then as many rounds as your group needs, moving a sponsor, softening a fade, testing the navy version against the black. Nothing is produced until you approve, the approved file becomes the production reference, and the 100% remake guarantee hangs off that exact file. After delivery, everything stays archived, so next season's top-up order reproduces the design identically, including for the new player who joins in June.

Two practical tips make the process even smoother. If a vector version of your logo exists anywhere, an old printer or sign-writer often has it, send it, and the rebuild step gets faster. And if your organisation has formal brand colours, send the references rather than describing them; "our blue" has ruined more gear industry-wide than any machine ever has.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a sublimated hoodie, exactly?

One where the design is dyed into the fabric rather than printed on top of it. Your artwork is printed with sublimation inks, then heat turns those inks to gas that bonds permanently with the polyester fibres. The design becomes part of the material, which is why it cannot crack, peel or flake the way surface prints do.

Why can't sublimated designs fade or peel?

Because there is no layer sitting on the fabric to fail. The colour lives inside the fibre itself, so it survives washing, stacking, gym bags and years of wear without the ageing you see on heat transfers and cheap prints.

How many colours can we use in a sublimated design?

As many as you like, at no extra cost. Sublimation prints from one digital file, so a fifteen-colour gradient design costs the same to produce as a single-colour one. This is the opposite of screen printing, where every colour adds setup and cost.

Are names and numbers really included?

Yes. Individual player names, nicknames and numbers are part of the same digital print run, so they are included at no extra cost on sublimated hoodies. For team and leavers gear this alone often decides the method.

What fabric are sublimated hoodies made from?

Polyester fleece in the 280 to 350 GSM range, because sublimation inks bond with polyester. The build we recommend depends on your climate and use: heavier for southern winters and premium feel, lighter for warm regions and training wear.

Can you sublimate onto cotton hoodies?

No supplier genuinely can; the chemistry needs polyester. If you want the 380gsm heavyweight cotton feel, we pair it with embroidery or screen printing instead, and we will tell you straight rather than fudge the physics.

Can a sublimated design cover the entire hoodie, hood and sleeves included?

Yes. Edge-to-edge coverage including hood, sleeves, pocket and back is exactly what the method is for, and it is also the answer buyers searching for all-over-print hoodies are looking for.

Will our exact club colours come out right?

We colour-match to your supplied references and keep them on file for reorders. Screen previews and fabric can differ subtly, which is why you approve a proper design proof before production, and actual colours may vary slightly from screen to garment.

What is the minimum sublimated order?

Ten units through CustomHoodie, with pricing improving at 25, 50, 100 and 200 plus. Because there are no per-colour setups, small sublimated runs stay economical in a way screen printing cannot match.

How long does a sublimated hoodie order take?

Design proof 1 to 2 business days after you order, unlimited revisions until you approve, then a guaranteed 3 to 4 weeks of production with tracked delivery on top Australia-wide.
